China Unionpay and Global Payments are working together to allow Unionpay cardholders to use their cards at select merchants in Canada.

The acceptance of CUP cards in Canada is expected to be a welcome advantage for the more than 150,000 mainland Chinese residents who visit Canada annually as tourists, business people and students, as well as for domestic merchants that enjoy a franchise with Chinese customers.

The first merchants that have opened acceptance business of UnionPay cards include the duty-free shops, retail stores and restaurants patronized by Chinese tourists.

Global Payments will continue to work with China UnionPay to promote the acceptance of UnionPay cards worldwide.

Up to now, UnionPay cards can be used for swiping for purchase at POS machines in merchants in 31 countries and regions abroad and for cash withdrawal at ATM machines in nearly 50 countries and regions.
