Alibaba Group has announced that the gross merchandise volume (GMV) of TaoBao.com, Alibaba’s ecommerce unit, surged 110 per cent in 2006 to over US$2.18 billion, and the daily transaction volume of Alipay.com, the online payment service of Alibaba Group, reached US$12.8 million by the end of 2006.
Taobao’s number of registered users rose to over 30 million by the end of 2006, a 116 per cent increase from 2005 and accounting for nearly all Internet users in China who say they shop online. Alibaba claims that the number of registered users of Alipay.com has surpassed 33 million and the company processes 460,000 transactions daily by the end of 2006.
